Which laser devices are regulated in Queensland
Queensland regulates Class 4 lasers — the powerful systems used for tattoo removal, hair removal, pigmentation and vascular treatments — under the Radiation Safety Act 1999. Standard IPL (intense pulsed light) devices are not currently licensed in Queensland, though best-practice safety still applies.
The use licence — to operate a laser
Every person who operates a Class 4 laser must hold a use licence. Getting one typically involves a Laser Safety Certificate, an Infection Prevention and Control Certificate, a trainee licence, supervised practical hours, and then a full use licence application to Queensland Health.
The possession licence — to own a laser
The business that owns the laser apparatus needs a possession licence. This requires a radiation safety and protection plan, equipment that meets Australian standards, and certification of your apparatus and treatment rooms for compliance.
Compliance certification by an accredited person

Training and certificates you’ll need
